How we met and the marriage proposal: We met across the bar – Andrew was my most charming and well-mannered customer! He proposed while we were on holiday in Wanaka, New Zealand. We were relaxing by the lake with a glass of wine after a long day hike. He had designed the ring himself and worked with the awesome team at Nicholas Haywood to get it perfect.
About our wedding day: We wanted to make our wedding special by making everyone feel like they were guests in our home. Our wedding was all about committing to each other in our most favourite place on earth at Andrew’s family farm and having our guests share in our joy. We had complete flexibility and control by having the wedding at the farm. It was intense having to pull together three venues from scratch, but we loved the freedom to make the weekend exactly how we wanted it – including a champagne garden party before the ceremony, designing our own canapés, and a dance floor that carried on until the very early hours of the morning.
Our wedding style: A country party where everyone could feel welcome and have a good time. We let the natural landscape speak for itself and decorated with elements from the farm such as gum leaves and rosemary in addition to our incredible native flowers from a local florist. We had a village behind us getting ready for the big day – our friends and family pitched in at every opportunity, from helping us build our arbor to making our wedding cakes and collecting hundreds of gum leaves!
Finding my wedding gown: I had actually seen the gown in a photo a year before I tried it on. I just knew that it was the perfect dress for me. I had been following Suzanne Harward on instagram ever since, and a post for their Sydney Trunk Show went up a week after I got engaged. Finally trying the dress on was a very calming moment, I just felt like me. And most important – I knew I would be able to dance in it!
First dance song: Lose yourself to dance by Daft Punk. Love songs weren’t really our thing, so we went with a song that we had always loved dancing to that was upbeat but slow enough that we probably wouldn’t fall over each other (we didn’t!).
Advice for future couples: Pick three to five things that are non-negotiable to you both and don’t compromise on them. Given there are about 100 things to organize and worry about when it comes to a wedding, you’ll still have 95 things where you can cut corners or let someone else take the lead. You don’t have to care about everything.
Couture experience at Suzanne Harward: My experience at Suzanne Harward exceeded every expectation. I don’t consider myself a fashion expert or pretend to know anything about dressmaking. I was a bit worried that I would be out of my depth. On the contrary, it was totally stress free and I felt relaxed and had fun whenever I was with the girls at the Trunk Show and my fittings. I truly believe that the positive energy at Suzanne Harward translated into how much I loved my dress in the end. I received highly personalized service and no concern or request was too silly or too much. Coming from Sydney it was actually fantastic having the dress down in Melbourne until the last moment because it meant I couldn’t obsess or get sick of it. It was so exciting to finally go down two weeks before the wedding with my mum and sisters for my fittings and take my dress home. The final product was amazing and fit me like a glove.
